Thomas gets Frank with Son as Spurs boss 'makes decision' on captain's future

According to reports, Thomas Frank, the new manager of Tottenham Hotspur, has decided whether or not he is willing to let go of captain Son Heung-min during the summer transfer window.

Tottenham triggered a contract extension for the South Korea legend to keep him on the books for an additional year, even though he was set to become a free agent at the end of June.

The goal of the renewal, as emphasized by then-head coach Ange Postecoglou, was to provide Son with the best opportunity to win a trophy at Tottenham, a mission that culminated in success in the Europa League the previous season.

Son’s future after the summer of 2026 is still unclear, though, and if Spurs want to recover any money for the former Bayer Leverkusen player, they will probably need to look for a buyer this summer.

According to TBR Football, Frank has now stated that he is open to Son looking for new opportunities before the 2025–26 season begins. The two are scheduled to meet in the upcoming weeks to talk about Son’s next course of action.

According to the report, Frank won’t prevent Son from leaving if the 32-year-old also expresses his desire to move on after ten years of service to the North London powerhouses.

In 454 games across all competitions since joining the Lilywhites for £25.7 million from Leverkusen in the summer of 2015, Son has amassed an incredible 173 goals and 101 assists, including 11 goals and 12 assists in the previous campaign.

The Tottenham captain has reportedly “accepted” that his time in North London is coming to an end, and up to three Saudi Pro League clubs are reportedly preparing offers for him.

The South Korean won’t be forced to leave Tottenham, but if he stayed, he would reportedly have to take on a more supporting role as Frank restructures the Lilywhites’ attack for the upcoming campaign.

Given his incredibly reliable output, lethal partnership with Harry Kane, and warm, affable demeanor both on and off the field, Son may be considered an indispensable figure by many Tottenham supporters.

With the permanent signing of Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich, Frank has already set himself up for success after Son, and the young Frenchman is expected to play off the left frequently in the upcoming campaign.

Teenage talent Mikey Moore, who is reportedly drawing loan interest but might stay if one of the barriers preventing him from making the first XI is removed, will also benefit from Son’s potential departure.

Spurs are reportedly still vying for three highly regarded Premier League attackers: Eberechi Eze, Antoine Semenyo, and Bryan Mbeumo. The latter is thought to be the most suitable for the left flank.

Even though Son’s 2024–25 season was viewed as lackluster by some because of the high expectations he has set for himself, his 17 goal involvements from 30 Premier League games is by no means a bad return, and if he decided to stay, there is no doubt that he would still have something to offer in 2025–26.
