According to a report, Arsenal is anticipated to make a second attempt to sign Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres after their initial offer was rejected.
Although it was reported earlier this week that the Gunners had made their first formal bid for Gyokeres, they have reportedly not yet made a firm decision on whether to put all of their eggs in one basket or the other—Benjamin Sesko.
After failing to sign the former Brighton & Hove Albion and Coventry City player for Atletico Madrid, Andrea Berta, the new sporting director of Arsenal, is well known for being a huge fan of Gyokeres.
Given that Berta scored an incredible 54 goals in 52 games last season, it appeared that Arsenal would make every effort to win the race for the Scandinavian when he arrived in North London.
Sporting rejected Arsenal’s initial offer, which included a fixed fee of €55 million (£46.8 million) plus an extra €10 million (£8.5 million) in bonuses, according to Portuguese publication MaisFutebol.
Arsenal’s new Gyokeres bid is expected to surpass the €70 million mark, while Man United’s “obstacles” have been disclosed.
The Gunners now plan to submit an updated offer that would exceed €70 million (£59.6 million), including performance-related bonuses, which has long been regarded as the magic number required to entice Gyokeres to leave Sporting.
Sporting will not require interested parties to pay the full €100 million (£85.1 million) release clause in the 27-year-old’scontract,which is set to expire after three more seasons.
But it has also been claimed that Sporting violated a gentleman’s agreement they had made with the player’s camp and refused to accept £59.6 million. The striker was so enraged by this that he threatened to go on strike.
However, things now seem to be more amicable, and Gyokeres’s group is reportedly becoming more hopeful that a constructive resolution will be achieved with Arsenal, who also get along well with Sporting.
Manchester United is still a possibility, but despite Gyokeres’ close relationship with head coach Ruben Amorim, the report says the Red Devils have encountered “obstacles” in personal terms negotiations.
Over the last two seasons, the 27-year-old has scored a stellar 97 goals and provided 28 assists in 102 games for Sporting in all competitions. He has also scored 15 goals in 26 games for the Swedish national team.
What’s new with Arsenal’s pursuit of Sesko?
Journalist Charles Watts recently told Sports Mole that it is currently unclear which way Arsenal will go in the striker market because negotiations have been intensifying with the group surrounding RB Leipzig striker Sesko as well.
The Gunners must also be on the lookout for a potential hijack attempt by London rivals Chelsea, as they have yet to agree on a fee with Leipzig or obtain the player’s final approval on personal terms.
The Slovenian international wants to continue his career in Europe despite the fact that Saudi Pro League powerhouse Al-Hilal reportedly tried to sign Sesko before the June 10 deadline in order to get him in time for the Club World Cup.
