Xabi Alonso, the head coach of Real Madrid, has acknowledged that he is unsure if Kylian Mbappe will be able to return in time to play in the team’s second game at the Club World Cup.
Due to illness, Mbappe missed Wednesday’s Club World Cup match against Al-Hilal.
Alonso stated following the 1-1 draw that the France international is still doubtful for Real Madrid’s June 22 matchup against Pachuca in the tournament’s second group stage.
“We are still unsure if he will be prepared for the upcoming game. A severe viral infection has been plaguing him. In the days ahead, we’ll keep a careful eye on his development,” Alonso informed reporters.
On June 27, Real Madrid will play Red Bull Salzburg to wrap up their group-stage campaign. It would be shocking if they did not advance to the competition’s knockout stage.
Gonzalo Garcia played through the middle against Al-Hilal while Mbappe was out, and the Saudi team’s goal was scored by Garcia before Ruben Neves scored from the penalty spot.
“Compared to the first half, the second half was significantly better. In the first period, both with and without the ball, we were deficient in a number of areas. We couldn’t find a balance and were losing the ball too quickly,” Alonso continued.
“We have discussed these topics, but it took us some time to fully understand them. The response at halftime pleased me. We were able to give the game a fresh perspective, alter the tempo somewhat, and locate additional players to provide the proper rhythm and control.
“That allowed us to position ourselves well around the opposition box, reposition our press, and spend more time close to their area. It’s a process. It takes time for everything. Despite the poor performance in the first half, we must focus on the positives and consider how we can grow from the setbacks.”
In reference to Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen, who both made their debuts against Al-Hilal, Alonso stated: “I want to start by congratulating them because today is a big day for them.
“They will undoubtedly be impacted by Real Madrid debut.
They will be key players for us, and I’m excited because they have that personality. Their presence will improve the quality of our work.”
During the Club World Cup match, Alexander-Arnold played 65 minutes before Lucas Vazquez took his place.
Eder Militao, David Alaba, and Antonio Rudiger were all sidelined by injury issues, while Huijsen played the entire ninety minutes.
