Alexander Isak, a target for Liverpool, accused Newcastle United of “broken promises” during the summer transfer window and stated that he “can’t continue” there.
The 25-year-old’sfuturehas long been a source of speculation, but towards the end of last month, rumors that the Sweden international had stated a wish to leave the Magpies and consider his options heightened speculation about an exit from St James’ Park.
Isak reportedly went on strike to try to push through a transfer to Premier League champions Liverpool before the September 1 deadline after refusing to play for Newcastle during preseason.
Despite being named in the Team of the Year, the striker, who is currently training away from Eddie Howe’s first team, also chose to skip Tuesday night’s PFA awards ceremony in Manchester because of his circumstances at Newcastle.
Isak, however, has now spoken out, posting a forceful statement on Instagram stating that he has “lost trust” in Newcastle.
The following was the statement:
“I’m proud to be recognised by my fellow professionals with a place in the PFA Premier League Team of the Season for 2024-25.
“First and foremost I want to thank my teammates and everyone at Newcastle United who has supported me along the way.
“I’m not at the ceremony tonight. With everything going on, it didn’t feel right to be there.
“I’ve kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken. That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn’t reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors.
“The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading.
“When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue. That’s where things are for me right now – and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself”.
Even though Newcastle turned down Liverpool’s £110 million offer for Isak 19 days ago, Arne Slot’s team is still keen to get the striker out of St. James’ Park.
The Sun claims that Liverpool has “approved” a British-record £130 million bid for Isak for next week and that they are certain Newcastle will allow the departing Swede to leave the team.
It is believed that the Reds will not make their improved offer until Monday, when they play the Magpies at St. James’ Park in their next Premier League match.
If a deal with Newcastle, who are still believed to value the striker at about £150 million, cannot be reached, it has also been suggested that Liverpool will look at other options.
Liverpool is also interested in signing defender Marc Guehi. With Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Giovanni Leoni, Will Wright, and Armin Pecsi already signed, the possible arrival of the Crystal Palace captain and Isak at Anfield would increase Liverpool’s summer spending to an incredible £466 million.
Prior to this summer’s transfer drama, Isak was a fan favorite at St. James’ Park and has established himself as one of Europe’s top strikers with the Magpies. He was left out of Newcastle’s squad for last weekend’s 0-0 draw at Aston Villa.
Since joining Newcastle in 2022, the former Real Sociedad striker has made 109 appearances in all competitions, contributing 62 goals and 11 assists, including 54 goals in 86 Premier League games.
