Alexander Isak, a target for Liverpool, made a shocking statement about his future at St. James’ Park, to which Newcastle United responded.
With Premier League champions Liverpool having already failed with one British-record offer worth £110 million, the 25-year-old’shigh-profilesaga is currently taking center stage in the summer transfer window conversation.
Before declining to play for the Magpies during preseason, Isak stated at the end of last month that he wanted to leave the team and consider his options. He is currently training away from Eddie Howe’s starting lineup.
Despite being named in the Team of the Year, the Sweden international chose to skip Tuesday’s PFA awards ceremony in Manchester because of his circumstances at Newcastle.
Isak, however, addressed his predicament publicly for the first time that same evening, stating on Instagram that he “can’t continue” at Newcastle and that he has “lost trust” in the Magpies as a result of the team’s “broken promises.”
Newcastle’s management is not pleased with Isak’s shocking revelation, and the team has responded with a statement stating that “no commitment has ever been made” to allow the striker to leave this summer.
Newcastle “does not foresee” the sale of Isak, a target for Liverpool, this summer.
Newcastle “does not foresee” Isak being sold, despite Liverpool’s intense interest, because the circumstances necessary for them to approve a sale before the September 1 deadline are unlikely to materialize.
“We are disappointed to have been alerted to a social media post by Alexander Isak this evening,” Newcastle said in a statement issued late Tuesday night.
“We are clear in response that Alex remains under contract and that no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer.
“We want to keep our best players, but we also understand players have their own wishes and we listen to their views. As explained to Alex and his representatives, we must always take into consideration the best interests of Newcastle United, the team and our supporters in all decisions and we have been clear that the conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired.
“We do not foresee those conditions being met.
“This is a proud football club with proud traditions and we strive to retain our family feel. Alex remains part of our family and will be welcomed back when he is ready to rejoin his teammates.”
Throughout the summer, Newcastle has made it clear that they would consider selling Isak only if they could find a suitable replacement and a club paid the £150 million they wanted for the Swede.
Liverpool reportedly “sanctioned” an improved British-record £130 million offer for Isak next week after their initial bid of £110 million at the beginning of this month failed to meet Newcastle’s asking price. According to reports, the Reds are certain the Magpies will allow the wantaway striker to leave.
It is believed that Arne Slot’s team will not make their improved bid until after Monday’s highly anticipated Premier League matchup at St. James’ Park against Newcastle.
In contrast to Liverpool, which has already spent more than £250 million on new players this summer, Newcastle has been frustrated by the transfer market as their top targets, Hugo Ekitike (who is currently at Liverpool), Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, and Benjamin Sesko, have all chosen to join Premier League rivals.
Given that Callum Wilson left when his contract expired and that the Magpies are reportedly still very interested in Brentford’s Yoane Wissa, Howe would prefer to sign two strikers before the deadline.
Isak, who has three years left on his Newcastle contract, helped the Magpies win the EFL Cup last season and has made 109 appearances, scoring 62 goals and dishing out 11 assists.
