Even though Marc Guehi is set to play for Crystal Palace in Europe, he will be able to play for Liverpool in the Champions League if he decides to move to Anfield. When Palace hosts Fredrisktad of Norway in their Conference League play-off first leg on Thursday night, Guehi will start for the team in their very first major European match.
Following a complaint from Nottingham Forest, who replaced Palace in the competition, Palace was demoted to the Conference League due to UEFA multi-club regulations, despite having qualified for the Europa League after defeating Manchester City in the FA Cup final the previous season.
The Londoners are reportedly asking far more than Liverpool is prepared to pay for a player who has entered the final 12 months of his contract, but Liverpool began negotiations with Palace last week over a move for Guehi.
It had been feared by some Reds supporters that Guehi would be cup-tied for the Champions League opening stage if he moved to Anfield after playing for Palace in Europe.
However, according to UEFA regulations, a player who participates in the Champions League, Europa League, or Conference League qualifying rounds is eligible to play for another club in European competition after the league stage.
Prior to his team’s European match on Wednesday, Palace manager Oliver Glasner spoke on Wednesday ahead of his team’s European debut and addressed the futures of both Guehi and Eberechi Eze, who is interesting Tottenham Hotspur.
“Most of you will be surprised that they will start again tomorrow because of all the rumours,” said Glasner.
“But they are committed here and they will play a crucial part.
“We deserve to play Europa League, but we got demoted and we will play Conference League. We will enjoy it.”
Following reports that the defender was seen ignoring the Palace manager following Sunday’s goalless Premier League draw at Chelsea, Glasner also addressed rumors surrounding his relationship with Guehi.
He remarked, “I’ve seen so much nonsense written about this.”
“I loved that Marc was upset that he didn’t win the game. It’s the clearest indication of our ambition he could give.”
