Maresca provides Palmer injury update after Chelsea thrash West Ham

According to Chelsea’s head coach Enzo Maresca, Cole Palmer has been dealing with a groin injury.

As anticipated, the playmaker was included in the Blues’ starting lineup for their Premier League matchup with West Ham United on Friday.

Palmer was substituted out before the game began, though, and Estevao Willian was selected for his team. He played a standout game as the team won 5-1 at the London Stadium.

There was legitimate worry about the club’s star player’s fitness, even though the England international was eventually not missed as the Blues cantered to three points against one of their rivals.

Palmer had a groin problem during last weekend’s goalless draw with Crystal Palace, Maresca disclosed during a press conference held after the game.

Palmer was rested after failing to participate fully in the warm-up, even though the plan was to take a calculated risk on him.

Football.london cited Maresca as saying: “Cole wasn’t 100% for the last four or five days. He felt something when he tried the warm-up.

“We didn’t want to take any chances. We’ll determine whether it’s a significant issue.

“Groin. Palace game, he was not 100% but he tried to make a big effort for the club, the fans, and the team,” the Italian said when asked about specifics.

“He made an attempt tonight, but it was not very good.”

Palmer will now have just over a week to recuperate for the August 30 West London derby against Fulham after Chelsea ultimately did not miss him on Friday night.

It might be worthwhile for Chelsea to give Palmer a full rest until September 13th, though, as that is their only competitive match until then.

He has made 101 club appearances and earned 12 England caps since the 2023–24 season began. Additionally, the 23-year-old’ssummervacation has only lasted three weeks.

When Fulham visits Stamford Bridge next weekend, Maresca’s repeated insistence that Chelsea cannot rely too heavily on Palmer will be demonstrated by the players who easily defeated West Ham.
