Following Calvin Bassey’s goal in Sunday’s FA Cup victory over Manchester United, Fulham has denounced the racist and homophobic remarks he received online.
The game ended 1-1 at Old Trafford after Bassey gave his team the lead before halftime. Fulham defeated the home team on penalties to advance to the FA Cup quarterfinals.
“Fulham Football Club is utterly appalled at the racist and homophobic abuse received and subsequently shared by Calvin Bassey on social media after yesterday’s FA Cup tie against Manchester United,” Fulham said in a statement on Monday.
“We strongly condemn this abhorrent behaviour which has no place in football or society. Such actions are entirely unacceptable, and we stand in full support of Calvin Bassey, who will continue to receive our full backing.
“We will do everything in our power to work with the relevant authorities in identifying the perpetrators of these vile messages and taking the strongest form of action against them.”
Kyle Walker of Manchester City was also the target of racist online taunts following their Champions League defeat at the hands of Juventus in December.
Following a Women’s Super League loss to Arsenal, Khadija “Bunny” Shaw, a forward for City, was subjected to racist taunts and had to miss a game due to mental health issues last month.
“Fulham Football Club is dedicated to promoting an atmosphere of respect and inclusivity and is committed to upholding a strong position against all forms of discrimination,” Fulham continued.
On March 29, Fulham will host Crystal Palace in the FA Cup quarterfinals.
